Minden PD drug bust highlights growing trend

Posted: Updated:
MINDEN, La. -
Minden Police say Paul Presley, 24, had just left FedEx where he paid $792 cash on delivery for a box full of synthetic cannabinoids when officers spotted his car and pulled him over.

Inside the box, officers say they found dozens of bags of synthetic marijuana that were likely ordered online from a Florida-based distributor. The packages have an estimated street value of $3,000.

"Minden Police are vigorously pursing all levels of illegal drug activity," MPD Capt. Marvin Garrett says.

The bust was the culmination of a four month investigation, but every day other drug dealers are finding their future wares online.

"If you know the keywords, it's just a few key strokes and hit the enter button," says Mark Ryan, Louisiana Poison Center.

Operating as research chemical laboratories, Chinese factories produce and sell the raw ingredients for synthetic marijuana. Those chemical ingredients are then shipped into the US where they're combined, re-packaged, and mailed out again.

"You truly have no idea when you buy one of these substances what you're getting," Ryan says.

MPD made another big bust Friday afternoon when they arrested Keodrick Loud, 30, on eight charges.

Garrett says an officer was patrolling Minden streets when he saw Loud- a convicted drug dealer- arguing with another person while his car was parked in the middle of the street.

Although Garrett says Loud tried to leave the scene when the MPD officer approached, but police were able to stop the suspect and search his car. Garrett says investigators found 90 grams of marijuana, 13 grams of powder cocaine, 3 grams of crack cocaine, 27 Loratab prescription pills, and $4,800 cash inside the vehicle. The drugs have an estimated street value of $3,000.

Garrett says Loud's 2003 Cadillac and cash were seized and turned into the district attorney's office under the forfeiture law.
