Traffic Headaches on East 70th

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La -

There are, not one, but two separate construction projects taking place right now on East 70th Street in Shreveport.

Michelle Jenkins is from Haughton. She came out to Shreveport to do some shopping and found her drive time was a lot longer than she expected. "I can't get off here anymore. It was go, stop, go, stop all the way down. If you're running low on gas, you'll worry that you're going to run out of gas right here in the middle of traffic. I got off the interstate and exited for 70th Street and it took me 30 minutes from the time I got off just to get to Hobby Lobby."

The road construction taking place from Line Avenue to Creswell is a widening and resurfacing project. The other, from Fern to Bert Kouns, on the same street is a concrete replacement job. But Susan Stafford with DOTD says, there is an end in sight. "The project that just started from Fern to Bert Kouns is looking to wrap up around mid August."

The traffic jam on the west side of Youree is expected to last a bit longer, until April of 2014. Stafford says they have a fix in the meantime. "Our traffic engineers have re timed the lights from Fern Avenue to Line Avenue and that's to help with the flow of traffic and congestion issues. With these projects, they are temporary. And in the long term is that we'll have better infrastructure and better roads."

Jenkins said, it's back to school shopping time and this traffic headache could hurt businesses in the area. "It absolutely is going to affect it. I mean, if not, maybe some people are going to go into Bossier instead of Shreveport for shopping."
