SHREVEPORT, La. -

Sergeant Jim Taliaferro has run the Shreveport- Caddo Parish CrimeStoppers for about seven years, but the program is in its 30th year.

"A lot of times, that's the information that catapults an investigation either further, or it reopens an investigation," Taliaferro says of the anonymous tips that come through the CrimeStoppers hotline.

The service gets about 27 to 40 calls a day, but that number peaks for high profile crimes. Investigators call CrimeStoppers one of their best assets.

"Almost instantly we will begin to receive tips, [and] calls flood in," says Shreveport Police Cpl. Marcus Hines. "So when we start talking about how valuable it is, it's invaluable."

Taliaferro says he uses social media to get the word out, but it is the YouTube and Facebook links he gets back- with the names, photos, and posts from alleged criminals- that make the bigger difference.

Whether it is over the phone or online, Taliaferro stresses CrimeStoppers tips are always confidential.

You never give your name, just your information.

If police make an arrest, callers can literally take that tip number straight to the bank.

The department's tip pay out averages $475-525 and rewards can reach as high as $1,000.

Over the years, Shreveport-Caddo Parish CrimeStoppers has paid out more than $210,000.

"People typically don't sit back and wait for a reward to go up," Taliaferro says. "They either know it or they don't. They seize the moment, or they won't."

Across the river, Bossier City CrimeStoppers has paid out $12,675 for a total 23 cases.

"The vast majority of crimes are solved with the participation of the public and that's where Crime Stoppers comes in," says Bossier City public information officer Mark Natale.

Between phone calls, the website and text messages, Bossier's CrimeStoppers has received 302 tips thus far, most of which report drug activity.
