A Texas Democratic lawmaker attended a conference at the White House on voting rights where Texas redistricting was on the agenda.
San Antonio state Rep. Trey Martinez Fischer was the only elected Texas official to meet with President Barack Obama to discuss a national strategy on voting rights. He said the administration pledged to work with civil rights groups to make sure the right to vote was protected.
Last week the Justice Department announced it supports requiring Texas to pre-clear all new election laws in the state. Attorney General Eric Holder said Texas has a recent history of intentional discrimination against minority voting rights.
Martinez Fischer is a plaintiff in a voting rights lawsuit in San Antonio that challenges new election maps.
Republican lawmakers insist they've adopted fair political maps.
