Caddo School Board Deadlocked

Posted: Updated:

It was six years ago when the Caddo Parish School Board found itself in almost the same position as they are in now, divided, with no superintendent come August 12th.

"I'm disappointed," said Board Member Bonita Crawford. "I wanted us to get a superintendent, so when Dr. Dawkins leaves we have someone to walk into that office the next day and we have the state that is waiting in the wings to see what we were going to do and we did nothing basically. "

It was a seven to five vote that brought Dawkins to Caddo Parish in 2008.

"I got beyond the vote last time and I worked with Dawkins for five years.  We can do what we need to do," said Crawford in an interview with Education Reporter Eric James.  Crawford is often the swing vote on the board but this time she says she was following what those in the community wanted and that was to see John Dilworth named Superintendent.

"We had two good candidates, really we had three but the advisory board wanted someone from within Caddo Parish, so that eliminated Perera, " said Crawford.

There is a chance someone could change their mind and vote for Dilworth next week or switch their vote to Robinson at a special meeting but Crawford says she is standing by her vote for Dilworth and while she likes Dr. Robinson and finds her to be " very knowledgeable," she feels Robinson lacks the experience needed to run the district.  "We need someone who has experience," said Crawford.

The board will meet August 6th. According to the board attorney, Reggie Abrams, the board can motion to call for a re-vote or they will decide to appoint an interim superintendent.

They could ask Robinson to be interim they could also ask Dilworth.
