Three NGOs in northwest Louisiana on Treasurer Kennedy's delinquent list

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La. -

State Treasurer John Kennedy puts the pressure on 36 non-governmental organizations across the state to get their paperwork in order.

These groups received money from the state in the past, and Kennedy said they have until the end of August to report how the money was spent or pay it back to the state.

In the northwest part of Louisiana, three organizations are on the treasurer's list: Boys and Girls Club of Natchitoches, Martin Luther King Jr. Neighborhood Association in Shreveport, and The Olive Branch Ministries also in Shreveport.

When KTBS contacted the executive director of The Olive Branch Ministries, she said it was the first she had heard of it.

"I don't know. I don't know what the reason is," said Lindora Baker. "I don't know if it's not reported yet or it's something I didn't do right. I don't know."

The Olive Branch Ministries is a non-profit group associated with Mount Olive Baptist Church. Baker said she filed the audit required by the state for the 2012-2013 fiscal year back in May. It receives state money for their summer feeding programs.

But Kennedy said this group and others did not do the right paper work.

"We have about $1.5 billion that's owed the people of Louisiana that's spread out across the state government," he said Monday. "Over 60 percent of it is over 180 days past due. If we can just improve that number by just 10 percent, that's a lot of extra money for our universities and our tax payers."

Baker said her time as a Caddo Commissioner has taught her how important it is report the money's usage back to the sate, and is now worried about the group's future.

"It's making me very nervous, especially the fact that we just got funded for the moneys to do a building project of seniors' apartments," said Baker. "August 31st , I'm going to know what's going on and have it fixed and cleared whatever it is."

We tried to contact the treasury department to find out more information on why The Olive Branch Ministries are on this list, like when the $20,000 that is unaccounted for was given to the organization, but have not received word back.
