Damages still adding up for resident near city water main break

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La. -

The massive water main that burst on Dunlap street in Shreveport over a month ago has officially been repaired.

The broken main pumped thousands of gallons of water down nearby Kenneth and Andrew Streets in the Allendale neighborhood before city crews could shut off the water.

The city directed residents who'd been flooded to contact their office of risk management to file a claim.

Resident Johnny Smith says that's what he did but is getting nowhere in the process.

"All of their school clothes, most of them had gotten ruined, most of them are just mildewed," Smith says.

Smith says it took the city several hours to stop the gushing water after the main burst.

During that time, the water pooled around - and inside - his home at the bottom of the hill on Andrew St., causing what Smith says is several thousand in damage, though he says he was told the city could pay no more than $3,000 for damages.

"The house was moldy and wasn't up to the code with the city, so that was a problem," Smith says.

Four of his six children are special needs - one in a wheelchair - and Smith says he's going to have to build another ramp in the home he's in now, as well as make other accomodations, all of which cost money.

"I still have to make adjustments to the doors and to the walkway that's out here.

But with school starting soon, Smith says he's just trying to put it all behind him.

"This here has been a disaster, a terrible disaster. And I hate it. If it was just me, I could manage."

The city's risk manager, Evelyn Kelly couldn't comment on a specific pending claim, but did say that Smith was never told there was a cap on how much the city can pay in damages.

She says each claim is looked at and processed individually.

Kelly says the city is still working to process those residents' claims as quickly as possible to get them some relief.

If there are residents still affected by this incident, they're asked to contact the city's office of risk management to file a claim.
