Caddo School Board Member Curtis Hooks goes on the defense

Posted: Updated:

"First of all, Eric, it is no one's business what I do in my personal life."

That is what Caddo School Board member Curtis Hooks told KTBS Education Reporter Eric James. Hooks is on the defensive after some board members complained that the District 5 representative made  a mockery of the superintendent-selection process by opting not to show up for board interviews with finalists John Dilworth and Agnella Perera. Hooks only showed up for the interview with Caddo Chief of Staff Mary Nash Robinson, the candidate he has openly supported for months.

The board deadlocked this week on the decision about who should replace Dr. Gerald Dawkins, who leaves the district in less than two weeks. The vote was a 6-6 tie between Robinson and Dilworth, a former Caddo administrator who left to lead school districts in Baton Rouge and Montgomery, Ala.

"Back in January when we chose not to renew Dawkins' contract, I  asked if she would run for the job and that I  would support her. I have nothing against Dilworth or the other lady, " said Hooks, who has been unwavering in his support of Robinson and he says it has nothing to do with the fact that they attend the same church.

"There is no law that states that I should have or had to be at either one of those meetings," said Hooks. The retired educator did not support the hiring of a  national search firm to find the next superintendent. He calls that search contract wasted money.  Perera, like Dilworth, are  from districts outside Northwest Louisiana.

"What the other board members should be asking themselves is why would they call the lady down from Virginia ( Perera)  and pay for her meal and flight  and then not even give her one vote.  That was a waste of money and they should be asking themselves that question vs. getting off in my personal biz, " said Hooks. He also  believes there was even a effort to prevent him from voting but sources within the board say that was not the case. None of the board members who complained to us about Hooks would go on camera.

KTBS also spoke with the board attorney who said members are not required to attend a certain number of meetings each year and they are not compensated for special meetings, like interviews.  A special board meeting is planned for Aug. 6, at that time the board could

re-vote and name a superintendent,  or they may name an interim superintendent. Classes begin Aug. 12. Dawkins' last day is Aug. 11.

We've been told by many veterans that they receive quality care at the V.A. hospital in Shreveport. But for some getting an appointment to see their caregivers is the challenge. According to our V.A., they do not have a problem getting patients seen quickly - and the numbers they report echo that conclusion. We’ve uncovered concerns, however, over how their numbers look so good - while patients are still waiting to be seen.“Certainly from my viewpoint here, as a veteran, as a physician, the c...

Ever since allegations that veterans died waiting for care came out of phoenix, we've all been asking, why, and how could an organization aimed at helping our servicemen and women foster an atmosphere where this has gone on for so long?
