SHREVEPORT, La. -

The new $24m North Louisiana Crime Lab moves one step closer to construction in Shreveport.

Organizers say the construction bids are, and they have selected a low bid from Don M. Barron Construction based out of Farmerville, La.

Now that plan is waiting for a go-ahead from the Division of Administration in Baton Rouge.

There are some concerns that commissions and engineering fees may equal up to an $900,000-950,000 over budget.

Still, authorities are confident they will work past that hurdle and get started with construction in the coming months.

"It's going to mean a lot not only for the way we do business, but for the people that we serve," says Jimmy Barnhill of the North Louisiana Crime Lab.

"The crime lab here in North Louisiana covers 29 parishes so more than a million people are served by this," says Caddo Parish District Attorney Charles Scott, who sits on the crime lab's board of directors.

The new 86,000 square foot North Louisiana Forensic Science Center more than double the lab's current space, and it will also be equipped with cutting-edge forensic technology.

The lab will go up on land leased from LSU Health. Medical students will train at the center in forensic pathology and forensic sciences.
