Benton Water Main

Posted: Updated:
Benton, La. -

Early Thursday morning work crews in Benton begin what they thought would be minor work on a major water line. "We should have the new line within the next three to four hours from that point we will have water service back on all over town," said Mayor Wayne Cathcart. He says replacing the twelve-inch water main running down the middle of town was needed to eliminate future breaks. But the water was suppose to be shut off for only thirty minutes. Thirty minutes turned into three hours, which turned into an emergency for some businesses. "We thought it was a boil advisory so we planned accordingly with water jugs and things but with the water actually being shut off completely we can't operate so we had to call our parents or I can lose a license over operating with no water," said Mrs. Holli's Child Development Center Owner Holli Thomas. But that closing became an unconvenience for parents. "All the way in bossier, wife works at Promise Hospital, she's a doctor over there and either one or the two of us have to come up here and this is the second time, it's quite inconvenient and it's unscheduled," said parent Ken Shiflett. The lack of water also closed one of the biggest buildings in the tiny town of Benton, the Bossier Parish Courthouse. But Benton's Fire District Number 4 was prepared for such the emergency. "We always have water on hand prior to any emergency, about 15-thousand gallons of water available first hand, we have mutual aid agreements with other departments that can bring tankers in for extra water," said Assistant Fire Chief Tim Turner. The boil advisory won't be lifted until the water has been cleared by the Department of Health and Hospitals, so residents are still asked to use caution.
