Horse that escaped barn fire doing well, workers out of jobs

Posted: Updated:
BOSSIER PARISH, La. -

Last week's devastating barn fire in Bossier Parish left 19 horses dead, but before the fire destroyed the building, one horse managed to get out.

"We call him Bullet as a nickname, but his name is Silver Epic," said Frank Robinson, who helps take care of the horse.

The 5-year-old colt has never been in a race but he showed off his speed and smarts last Thursday by being the only horse to escape the burning barn at River Point Stables.

"He had one little scratch on this side right here," Robinson said about Bullet's left side. The horse also had a large knot near the scratch.

Bullet, is Robinson's girlfriend's horse. He rides Bullet for exercise like he did many of the horses that died in the fire.

"It's really bad for me right now," Robinson said. "I don't see a way to make any money for a little while."

Robinson was paid about 10 dollars for every horse he took out and before the fire he rode 12 to 13 a day. Now he's down to just exercising one or two.

But just like how Bullet escaped the flames of the burning barn, Robinson knows he'll find a way to make it.

"Just leave it in the good Lord's hands. He always said leave it to him so he'll work it out."

Friends of the workers at the barn have set up a bank account at Regions Bank to help those with out a job because of the fire. You can donate at any Regions Branch. Just tell the teller you'd like the money to go to the River Point Horsemen's Fire Fund or use the account number 0187826771.
