Saints in search of offensive consistency

When Joseph Morgan went down with injury this past weekend, the Saints suffered a big loss to their offense. With Marques Colston and Lance Moore as the only proven veterans, the depth of the receiving corps remains a concern, and the team must develop additional threats.

"We don't have a choice, that's the name of this game," Lance Moore said. "Some guy goes down, another guy has to get up and be ready to go. We feel like we've got the depth at receiver, maybe not a lot of guys who have played much, but definitely guys who have the ability and talent, and we have to plug them in."

Colston's recent return has been a boost with the eighth-year pro enjoying his most productive day so far, and tight end Jimmy Graham looks nearly unstoppable. However, coach Sean Payton wants to see his offense fine tune the little things.

"I think the consistency is something that we're lacking right now," Payton said. "Too many assignment errors, too many detail things, which is fairly typical here in the second week, so we have a lot of work to do to clean some of this stuff up."

Quarterback Drew Brees added, "We want to score every time, and when we don't we're upset, period. A little more to be desired out there, so we have some work to do."

And with the preseason opener just three days away, Brees says the offense is now running through as many game-like situations as possible.

"It's back and forth at times, but you do love that competitiveness, it's what makes us all better is to try to create as much of a game-like scenario as you can," Brees said. "That way once you do get into a game, there's a comfort level you've been there."

Running back Mark Ingram added, "The more we keep practicing, the more we keep pushing each other. The defense is real good, and they're pushing us, giving us a lot of different looks. They're out there flying around, so we're all competing and getting better."

The Saints kick off their preseason schedule Friday night at 7:00 against the Chiefs in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. Fox 8 will televise the game.
