After Further Review: Offense, defense both make plays in practice 11

In one of the most competitive practices of camp to date, both the offense and defense had great moments Tuesday.

The first team offense dominated the red zone drill. Drew Brees and Jimmy Graham were on point as usual. Brees hit Graham on a fade for a touchdown over Keenan Lewis. Later they connected on a vertical seam route for a score. Both catches ended with emphatic Graham spikes. At this stage of camp, Graham has been the most consistent player on the Saints offense.

Marques Colston was still limited but was able to make a nice grab in the back of the end zone over Corey White. Brees also hit tight end Ben Watson for a score as well.

The two-minute drill was a complete 180. The first team defense completely dominated the offense.

Roman Harper pick-sixed Brees on the first play of the drill. On their next drive they forced a four and out. On that drive, Harper had a sack, Will Smith batted down a pass and Lance Moore uncharacteristically dropped a pass.

It was funny to see the emotions from the two-minute work after practice. The defense seemed very happy afterwards, while the offense seemed genuinely mad about it.

Play of the Day

During team drills, Brees hit Courtney Roby on a post pattern for a 64-yard touchdown strike.

What made the play work was the blitz pick up that gave Brees an extra half second to hit Roby in the open field where the defense had no other players.

Other Observations

-         The stands are a telltale sign of where the Saints are at in training camp. Tuesday was easily the least amount of fans at an open Saints practice. The grind is here and fans are ready for games.

-         Jason Smith is now with the third team at right tackle.

-         Newly signed wide receiver Steve Breaston got some work as punt returner.

-         Cornerback Patrick Robinson was also limited but did individual drills mostly with the second team.

Dallas knows it will need a great effort from everyone on the defensive side when the Cowboys host the 49ers on Sunday just to give Tony Romo and the offense a shot to make it a game.
