Saints dealt double dose of season-ending injuries

New Orleans, La. - The injury bug has taken a big bite out of training camps throughout the NFL. Unfortunately, the Saints were not immune.

Wide receiver Joe Morgan and defensive end Kenyon Coleman both saw their seasons come to an end. Morgan tore his ACL and meniscus. Coleman tore his pectoral muscle.

"Two players that are significant obviously they're significant losses," said Coach Sean Payton. "And we got to find some guys that can step up and take their spot."

Coleman has spent most of camp with the first team at defensive end. His spot will likely now go to second year pro Akiem Hicks.

"You hate to think of it like that and you feel for your guy. You got to step up and play your role and that's my role," said Hicks.

Morgan's replacement may not be as clear cut. Morgan was getting a lot of first team reps but so too were Kenny Stills, Nick Toon and Andy Tanner. Now those players and newly signed Steve Breaston will get even more of those snaps.

"We've got enough numbers here and they are going to get plenty of work, even with the first or second group," said Payton.

Morgan's injury occurred in the black and gold scrimmage on a hit by first round pick Kenny Vaccaro. But Drew Brees said Vaccaro should not be blamed for Morgan's injury.

"It was such a freak play," said Brees. "It was kind of bang, bang. You know he catches it and Kenny is just there to jump on his back and in the process of putting his knee down, it kind of buckles on him, gets caught in a funny position. It was one of those freak incidents where it's kind of out of everyone's control. It just happened."
