2013 KTBS 3 St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway

Posted: Updated:

The 23rd KTBS 3 St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway wrapped up at 5 PM Sunday. An amazing 14,000 tickets were sold, which raised more than $1.4 million for the research hospital. For the kids, touched by cancer, giveaway is about much more than winning a home. It ensures the hospital is around to keep finding new ways to fight cancer and keep them healthy.

"It just touches my heart that people put in so much time and effort to keep St. Jude open," 14-year-old leukemia survivor Kami Chauncey said. She says that's thanks to St. Jude, not only for its state of the art medical care, but for providing happy environment to keep kids positive and fighting their battle.

"One of the best medicines ever, is happiness," Chauncey said. "That's something that they keep in check."

The giveaway has made sure St. Jude will continue to provide that happiness. Its goal was to raise more than a million dollars to pay for hospital services, patient travel costs and more.

"It cost $1.8 million a day to keep the doors of the hospital open, and 75 percent of that money comes from public donations exactly like the KTBS 3 St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway," St. Jude's Emily Miller said.

Miller says around 50 local volunteers helped pull the event together and sell tickets for the dream home. Thousands of tickets were purchased and each dollar will help St. Jude treat kids like Chauncey.

"It's just petrifying to know that you have cancer," Chauncey said. "It's a battle everyday, but every day counts and every day is one day closer to getting better."

The winner of the 2013 KTBS 3 St. Jude Dream Home was Mary Smith of Shreveport.
