Texas holds tax free weekend

Posted: Updated:
TEXAS -

Texas held a successful tax-free weekend.

The sales tax was waived on certain products all weekend long this past weekend. Shoppers saved about $8 for every $100 spent which adds up to nearly $79 million in state and local taxes that were not collected Friday though Sunday.

Sales tax was not collected on most clothing and shoes priced under $100 including caps, coats, dresses and suits.

"I use coupons also, if you really put all those savings together, every penny does help especially in today's economy" says Texas shopper Kasey Nine.

The Texas sales tax holiday is an annual event that started in 1999.

The House voted 53-34 Tuesday to pass the proposal by Republican Rep. Thomas Willmott, of Kenner. Drivers could secure dogs with a crate, leash or a ventilated bed cover, under the bill.
