Free dental clinic offered to Texarkana area residents

Posted: Updated:
TEXARKANA -

It's a mission that will make you smile. A free dental clinic is being offered to Texarkana area residents. More than 30 dentists from all over Texas are participating in the 2-day Texas Mission of Mercy. After screening patients, the dentists take X-Rays, do fillings and take extractions. Each dentist works on about 2 patients every hour. CHRISTUS Saint Michael's Health System is partnering with the Texas Dental Association to make the free clinic possible. Their goal is to tackle dental problems facing people in the Texarkana area who can't afford dentistry.

"Probably about 90 percent of the people we are seeing today, probably never see the inside of a dental office because they don't have access, no insurance or financial means. These people need some help" says Richard Smith with the Smiles Foundation.

The clinic was open this past Saturday at 6 a.m. at Texas High School. All patients were seen on a first-come-first-serve basis. Dentists treated about 500 patients in the 2-day clinic.
