Accused Fire Captain appears in court; arraignment date set

SHREVEPORT, La -
The Shreveport Fire Captain involved in the scandal surrounding Fire Station 8 appeared in court Tuesday.

Captain Derrick Harris only stood before a judge for a couple of minutes but in that time he named his council and set the arraignment date of August 28, 2013.

Harris' lawyer John Settle tells KTBS 3 News that there's a lengthy relationship between his client, the accused, and the alleged victims.

According to Settle, the fire station on Velva Street "adopted" those men, bought them gifts, took care of them, and even sent them to Disney World.

Earlier this month, 50-year-old Harris was arrested and charged with one count each of cruelty to the infirm and principal to prostitution.

The arrests of 26-year old Clint Richardson, 37-year-old Billy Glass, and Jason Vaughan followed.

Settle also said that his main concern is making sure Harris is not "thrown under the bus." Settle tells KTBS 3 News that Harris was the first person arrested, he spent a significant amount of time in jail, and is the only black person charged at this stage of the investigation.

The lawyer also pointed some attention to Shreveport Mayor Cedric Glover calling for justice to play out in the court room and not city hall.

Settle says at this point, state officials have not provided any information to him.

He also shared some idea as to who the players are Peter Carmouche for Shreveport Fire Chief Craig Mulford, Steve Glassel for Jason Vaughan.
