Lawyers share firefighters' story

SHREVEPORT, La. -

"It's changed his life, and it's going to change his life," attorney Peter Flowers says of his client Clint Richardson, 26, as the fireman now fights for his reputation and his freedom.

Shreveport firefighters Clint Richardson, Derrick Harris, Billy Glass, and Jason Vaughan are charged one count each of cruelty to the infirm and principal to prostitution. Randy Chandler is charged with one count of cruelty to the infirm.

"He- and I suspect these other firemen- are terrified to have the weight of the government on them," Flowers says.

Flowers says allegations that employees on Station 8 A-Shift bought a prostitute for a mentally disabled man and hazed another are incorrect, blown out of proportion, and do not accurately reflect his client's relationship with the alleged victims.

"My understanding is that these two men are treated very well and very kindly and are somewhat dependent on these fire fighters," Flowers says.

Standing on the courthouse steps after his client Captain Derrick Harris's first court appearance, lawyer John Settle said the station 8 crew took care of the handicapped men, even paying for one to go to Disney World.

KTBS 3 News has learned at least one victim has signed with a lawyer and may pursue a civil lawsuit, but Settle says said there is no-wrong doing involved on a criminal or civil level.

"There's always a potential for a lawsuit, but I believe he will be acquitted in the criminal court and if there's any civil action, that will be lost as well by the alleged victims," Settle says.

Flowers says his first priority is exonerating Richardson, even if an acquittal may not return his client's life to normal.

"My client and probably a number of the other clients' lives will never be the same," Flowers says.

With a rise in online classes, many educational institutions are asking the question, how can they maintain academic integrity in the digital age.
