Parish could plant 10,000 trees next year

Posted: Updated:

A recent Caddo Parks and Rec meeting revealed an ambitious plan. Local organizations are teaming up to replenish the parish's tree canopy. One commissioner wants 10,000 trees planted. In fact, the upcoming MPC requires at least 500 trees be planted a year because the parish loses a higher number in that time. The tree planting plan is still in the works. Commissioner Matthew Linn says thousands of trees are cut down every year.

"They're coming down way faster than we're putting them in the ground to grow some more," Linn said. "So, we need to put forth a conscious effort to replace them."

That's just what the Shreveport Green is planning. Linn is working with them in a mission to plant possibly 10,000 trees around the parish. It's an effort not only to replace harvested trees but those planted years ago that are dying out.

"There has not been a huge boom to plant trees," Linn said. "So, a lot of the trees that we have that are mature are slowly falling down. As we're suffering through these droughts that we've had recently we're losing even more trees."

Linn says it'll take a massive effort to plant the trees. Shreveport Green and the parish have partnered with the Shreveport-Bossier Tourism Bureau, SWEPCO and the U.S. Forestry Department. The final cost for the trees has yet to be determined, but will be split between the partners and Caddo Parish.

"I believe that any amount of money that they will be willing to give, that we can match with the parish," Linn said.

Linn says trained volunteers will plant the trees, like those from the area Boy Scout's district.

"This won't be the first time we've planted trees within the Boy Scouts," Jon Corkern, the district director, says every troop, cub pack and crew will be asked to provide volunteers.

"We have close to 1,500... within Caddo Parish," Corkern said.

Linn says they'll plant trees just about everywhere in the parish, especially the newest stretch of L. a. Highway One.

"All of the parish roads and the parish parks. There's an aspect of the tree planting that we'd like to do a giveaway to the citizens of Caddo Parish," Linn said. "So, that they can take a tree and plant it at their home."

Linn says trees are needed, not only for aesthetics, but for the environment's health as well as pollution control. According to American Forests, one tree can absorb 48 pounds of carbon dioxide from the air a year. A large tree can create enough oxygen to support two people.

More details about the plan should become available in the coming weeks. Linn says the planning process will happen throughout the rest of the year. Hope is the trees will be ready for planting in January 2014, which is Arbor Month.
