Planning Time for Teachers

Posted: Updated:

For more than 20 years, teacher Mack Evans says he has made things work when it comes to planning how he teaches students.

But after the Caddo School Board voted to eliminate 107 teaching positions and reduce teachers planning period to every other day vs. every day, he says it has caused one big headache..

"When we lost the planning period, we gained a class," said Evans.

Evans says he now only has about three hours a week to plan multiple lessons. He showed KTBS 3 News about three pages of things he does during his planning period, if he get to use that time at all.

"Sometimes your planning period is your tutoring time, " said Evans.

Jackie Lansdale, with Red River United, says this is not a good sound academic practice and told the board changing the planning period was going to be an issue.

"They were looking for a way to cut money and they did it by cutting teachers and it may have been the easy way to do it but the board got it wrong and they are going to have to fix it."

The lunch time for teachers was also shortened to 25 minutes.

We did contact district officials and  in a statement they said:

"We are currently working on this issue regarding planning time for high school teachers.  Student counts are being evaluated at each school with staffing changes possibly being made after labor day.  We will continue to work with each school making sure teachers receive their 225 minutes of planning time per week according to school board policy."
