After Further Review: Left tackle, the competition that never was

Kudos to Charles Brown, he saw an opportunity and seized it. Barring a complete collapse, he will be the Saints starting left tackle in 2013.

It's a good sign for Brown, who's finally flourishing in the system he's been in for four years now. But the truth he didn't face much competition. In fact I thought the left tackle battle would be the most intriguing of camp. But it turned out to be the competition that never was.

Jason Smith was exactly the bust the Rams and Jets both considered him to be. He was supposed to give Brown a run at left tackle. Instead, he was quickly demoted to the third team and by the time he was released on Wednesday, was playing right tackle.

Rookie Terron Armstead has never been a threat. He is raw, very raw. He may have been good enough to move up the depth chart ahead of Smith, but he's not ready to run with the first team. Not by a long shot.

That brings me to my next concern. It's something that hasn't been discussed much but one that must be at least considered when talking about Brown.

He has a history of injuries, thus going into the season without a quality backup would be risky. It's impossible to predict but should he go down, I'm not sure Armstead is that guy, at least not now. Bryce Harris and Zach Strief have all filled in on that side.

It's probably something the Saints aren't thinking about, assuming a player will get injured just reeks of bad karma.

But should the need arise; I'll be curious to see who they call on.
