A suspect wanted in Florida on state criminal charges, including conspiracy to commit murder of two judges, was captured Thursday night at a local hotel.

Joseph Russell Schmitt, 46, of Panama, Florida was taken into custody at the Horseshoe Casino Hotel at approximately 7 p.m. by a contingency of law enforcement officers after the United States Marshal's Office received information of his whereabouts.

Agents with the U.S. Marshal's Violent Offender Task Force, the F.B.I., along with the Bossier City Police Department S.W.A.T team and Bossier City patrol officers responded to the hotel and took Schmitt into custody outside his hotel room with the assistance of Horseshoe Casino security personnel.

Upon his arrest, Schmitt indicated to officers that he had explosive devices in his hotel room and inside his vehicle which was parked outside the hotel. The Bossier City Fire Department Bomb Squad was then called to the scene and searched both locations but no such devices were found.

Schmitt was booked into the Bossier City Jail as a fugitive while Florida authorities make arrangements to extradite him. The conspiracy to commit murder charges originate out of Bay County, Florida. Schmitt was also wanted out of St. Johns County, Florida for aggravated stalking after an injunction.
