CHRISTUS Health officials clear up confusion about available services

SHREVEPORT, La. -

A shake-up at CHRISTUS Health left many in the community confused and wondering just what's currently available for medical care.

CHRISTUS Health's restructuring plan, announced in May, involves closing its St. Mary Place campus and moving operations to an expanded Highland campus on Bert Kouns in Shreveport.

But medical services at St. Mary haven't closed up shop just yet.

"Neonatal intensive care unit, we call that the NICU, our Cancer Treatment Center, our inpatient rehab, our labor and delivery, we call that The Birthplace, our breast center and our wound care center," says William Lunn, Chief Operating Officer for CHRISTUS Health Shreveport-Bossier.

Lunn says those services will be fully operational for the next 18 to 24 months, as the Highland expansion is constructed.

Beginning September 6th, all adult emergency and in-patient floors will be closing at CHRISTUS St. Mary place.

"That's part of our strategy is to look at bringing care to people and to the neighborhoods they live in."

And confusion hasn't just been among patients.

About 200 jobs have been affected by the overhaul.

But Lunn says CHRISTUS has tried to be as transparent as possible with their staff during the transition.

"We've chosen people in our ministry who we believe are gonna be the best to help us move forward so we're fielding the best team."

Lunn says the ultimate goal is to provide a one-stop shop for health care in the community.

"If a patient has cancer or needs heart surgery, you can come to a medical center in south Shreveport that's not going to say, well, you need this procedure done at one of our other campuses."

The children's only emergency room and the pediatric intensive care unit, or PICU, are closing and will not re-open at the Highland campus.

Lunn says these simply weren't seeing the patient load deemed necessary to continue operations.

However, to be clear, that doesn't mean you can't bring your kids to the Highland emergency room.

All emergency patients will be seen at that location.

CHRISTUS Health has cited a duplication of pediatric services in the market, as well as a decrease in Medicaid funding as reasons for the eventual shutdown of the St. Mary campus.
