Local March on Washington Anniversary Rally

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La -

Next week marks a 50-year milestone in the civil rights movement, the March on Washington. Locally, organizers are coming together to make sure people who can't be in Washington can still celebrate. Lloyd Thompson is the president of our local NAACP, just one of the sponsors of Saturday's rally. "When I look at the speech that Dr. King gave 50 years ago that said America has given Negroes a bad check, I think we still haven't cashed in on that check."

He says Saturday's march will give people here in the ArkLaTex an opportunity to participate with the thousands gathering in the nations capitol to remember the historic March on Washington, and talk about local issues. "We're going to talk about the Stand Your Ground Law. My main issue is to look at the LSU employees and make sure they're going to be treated fairly." And those are just some of the issues to be discussed. Thompson says, people should come out expecting a change. "We're looking for a big crowd tomorrow because there's so much that needs to be done in this community."

The rally will be held Saturday, August 24th at the Caddo Parish Courthouse. It's from 11:30 until 1:00.
