Texas Students Head Back to Class:Changes for Texarkana, Tx, students

Posted: Updated:

Students in Texas headed back to school Monday. They were the last in the region  to return to class.

Over the summer school officials in  Texarkana, Texas, realigned three of their schools to better deal with an increase in enrollment.

The Dunbar campus is now  a Pre-K center, Theron Jones is now K-2nd grade and Westlawn Elementary is 3rd-5th.

Superintendent Paul Norton says the increase in school population also prompted a change in how they bus students.

"With the realignment of these school, we expanded our busing zone. We use to have the 2 mile attendance zone and if you were in that zone we didn't bus those kids to school. We have eliminated that and now provide bussing for those students ," said Norton.

This will also be the first year freshman students at the high school will have a chance to not only earn their high school diploma but also an Associates' Degree in General Studies from Texarkana College.

"We are providing a service for these kids that they may not have sought out themselves after they graduate from high school. This gives them a chance have the skills needed to go right into the work force when they leave high school. And for those who go on to college it won't  cost them as much because they will have already completed a number of classes." said Principal Brad Bailey.

For students like Carley Kelley, who is a freshman, she is just nervous about completing the first day of high school.

"I am so nervous, this is a big school and I know I am going to get lost." Kelley told KTBS.
