COTTON VALLEY, La. -

Drivers along Louisiana Highway 371 are slowing down and stopping to show their support for breast cancer awareness and breast cancer survivors thanks to Calumet Lubricants and the plant manager's creative idea.

Cotton Valley plant manager Charles Cost's wife, Faye was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005.  When the company made a generous donation earlier this year to the Northwest Louisiana Affiliate of Susan G. Komen, Cost decided to take his support a step further.

"Breast cancer has had a profound impact on my life.  My mother lost her battle with breast cancer and my wife along with several Calumet employees' friends and relatives have been impacted as well.  To me it is very personal." Cost said.  "As I drove into my plant one day I saw the tank as a wonderful place to tell a story.  Breast cancer awareness saves lives.  It's all about early detection.  Every woman with stage four breast cancers started at stage one.  If they had only known.  So to all of the women and men who lost their battle with breast cancer, to the survivors like my wife, to all of the women fighting for their lives, this ribbon is for you."

The 20' x 14' foot tall pink ribbon graces the west side of a Calumet storage tank.  It took several design changes and about a week to create the tribute to breast cancer awareness.  Cost figured it would attract attention, but he never dreamed it would literally stop traffic.  One Cotton Valley resident, who is currently fighting cancer, stopped on the side of the road to take a picture. A Calumet employee's wife who is battling breast cancer posted a picture of it on her Facebook page and has more than 1,500 likes.

NWLA Affiliate of Susan G. Komen executive director Lindsay Dean is appreciative of Calumet's donation and the dedication to Calumet's battle against the disease.  "This huge pink ribbon is a symbolic gesture to help us spread our mission to end breast cancer forever.  The location is perfect.  So many of the people we serve live in the rural areas of the ten parishes in our affiliate's territory.    This ribbon reminds everyone of the ongoing fight so many people are facing, as well as a reminder for women to schedule annual screening mammograms and if they can't afford one or don't have health insurance, we can help."
