Whole Brain Teaching : Apollo Elementary

Posted: Updated:

A teaching technique that has been in practice for about 10 years is gaining momentum not only nationally but locally as well.

It's called the  "Whole Brain Teaching " technique.

According to the developer of the program "Whole Brain Teaching," is  a research based system that utilizes all areas of the brain, keeps children engaged throughout their lessons, and helps them retain much more information than the standard lecture-discussion model.
"Whole Brain Teaching" is a highly interactive form of instruction that delivers information to students in short "chunks." Kids then teach what they have just learned to their partners, using hand-gestures to help remember specific vocabulary.  While students teach each other, the teacher walks around the room to discover who understands the lesson and who needs more instruction.
Research shows that children retain more information when they have an opportunity to put it into their own words and use gestures to emphasize key instructional units plus, it's amazingly fun, according to Apollo Elementary Principal Julie Dupree.

"What do I like best about this …  I think the students are having fun with learning and the teachers are having fun and that is what it is all about," said Dupree.

The method also cuts down on discipline issues. With one word from the teacher,  the entire class knows when to stop, turn around  and focus on the teacher.

"You are not saying , you stop , and you stop, the whole class stops and answers you at the same time, " says kindergarten teacher Christen Stokely who started using the technique last year.

Other teachers took notice of what Stokely was doing and now the entire school is using some form of the "Whole Brain Teaching" method.

"We put in a lot of different things in place to work on brain training which is exercising or using the brain through all modalities"

Several other schools in Bossier and Caddo are also using similar forms of the technique.

The creator of the programs provides free online courses via YouTube and through his web site.

We've been told by many veterans that they receive quality care at the V.A. hospital in Shreveport. But for some getting an appointment to see their caregivers is the challenge. According to our V.A., they do not have a problem getting patients seen quickly - and the numbers they report echo that conclusion. We’ve uncovered concerns, however, over how their numbers look so good - while patients are still waiting to be seen.“Certainly from my viewpoint here, as a veteran, as a physician, the c...

Ever since allegations that veterans died waiting for care came out of phoenix, we've all been asking, why, and how could an organization aimed at helping our servicemen and women foster an atmosphere where this has gone on for so long?
