Family Struggles With Upcoming Water and Sewer Rate Increase

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La -

City council approved a rate hike to address our aging water and sewer system although some say, they can't afford the rate increase. So city officials say are working on a plan to help out.

Jimar Davis, his wife, and their three children live in Shreveport. He says he's disappointed city officials waited until the cost to repair the water and sewer system was so high. "If you only have so much coming in a month and you've planned your year off of 48 dollars... that 10 dollar increase will set you back. We've known about this for years and it's something that could've been avoided if we slowly, gradually brought the percentages up."

Mayor Glover says they're working on a safety net to help by tweaking the already existing SWAP or Shreveport Water Assistance Program. The program assists families who qualify, with paying their water and sewer utility bills. Mayor Glover said, "There's no convenient choice when you have to make very hard decisions that impact people on multiple levels.... So we are increasing in direct proportion, to each and every increase that comes along with these rate adjustments, an increase in appropriated funding available for the Shreveport Water Assistance Program."

Davis says, he hasn't qualified in the past, so his family will have to find a Plan B. Davis offered, "Many times I get flagged for making too much money to be covered by these programs but I don't see it come in my house. People have to plan out, and it's a month away, what am I going to do for this 10 extra or 20 extra dollars for my water bill."
