Business at Shreveport Downtown Airport wants to open Red River to seaplanes

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La. -

The Shreveport Downtown Airport has grown a lot in recent years adding a lot new hangars to the property.

One business based out of there would like to land a different kind of clientele by opening up the river.

"We'd like to take the north side of the airport and make that a sea lane operation," said Jeremy Williams, chief pilot for Tubreaux Aviation. "So we'd have a place to land and taxi right into a hangar made for sea planes."

The plane would land right on the Red River.

Williams said it would be the perfect location to teach pilots to fly seaplanes and give them their ratings.

"We just have to have some plans and talk to the state, federal government about being able to open a sea plane operation on the Red River," said Williams.

The idea of installing a sea lane here at the Downtown Airport is just that--an idea. But airport director Stacy Kuba said they are excited about the possibilities.

"We have a lot of interest in people who want to come and learn how to use a sea plane, and potentially the possibility to land on the river and other waterways around the area," said Kuba. "This would give people a place to store their aircraft at and they would know it was safe and protected here."

It would be a take off point for pilots to diversify their skill and for a little fun.

"It's just cool to be able to splash down and pull up next to a boat with a bunch of friends on it, and switch out for the next ride," said Williams.

Kuba said the airport's primary focus is to get the pavement re-done at the facility now. She said she will really start pushing the sea lane idea in a few years.
