Local Bar Owners Want to Open for Sunday Night Football

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La -

Are you ready for some football??

Local bar owners say they're ready to get off the sidelines when it comes to Sunday liquor sales.

Madison Wynn owns 1910 Martini and Hookah Lounge. "We've had so many people come in and ask us if we're open on Sunday's and are we cooking and actually we can't be open.  It's a little frustrating because we're like 200 yards from the line."

He and a few other bar owners in the area say with the upcoming football season, they don't want to miss out on Sunday's business. Julian Washington owns Southern Soul Lounge, he said, "Another day of revenue will give them more hours, and more revenue for the city and it helps us all the way around. It helps us keep our community more active, keeps doors open, keeps buildings from becoming vacant."

So these business owners are banding together to see if they can get permits allowing them to open an extra day. Bars in Downtown Shreveport are open for business on Sunday nights, but this coalition of 8 bar owners have businesses outside of Downtown's entertainment district. They say now that football season is upon us, they'd like to open on Sunday's as well.

Wynn said, "Originally we were told it was a zoning issue and it could be near impossible or take a long time to change the zoning. Turns out that's not the case, it's not a zoning issue, it's more of an ABO issue."

The owners aren't sure what's holding them back but they've scheduled a meeting with city leaders to see what can be done. Candace Paul owns Coyote's Bar and Grill "It's not just the fact that downtown is open on Sunday, all of these other businesses do the same thing we do and they're open and we're not."

The owners are banding together on the initiative and they say they will have a meeting with city officials on Friday, September 6th about the subject in hopes that they can take it before the city council in coming weeks.
