NWLA Technical College in Minden gears up for grand opening

Posted: Updated:
MINDEN, La. -

With one semester under its belt, and another just beginning, Northwest Louisiana Technical College's brand new 90,000 square foot Minden campus is full steam ahead.

"Wonderful new facility, state of the art training, it's been beyond our wildest dreams," says Regional Director, Charles Strong.

Strong says their enrollment is skyrocketing, something he attributes to the state of the current job market.

"The majority of 21st century careers require more than high school but less than a bachelor's degree."

He adds that a recent push by Louisiana lawmakers to fund expansions for community and technical colleges across the state has been hugely beneficial.

"It took [Hurricanes] Katrina and Rita to get the state to fully realize the need for a trained, skilled workforce."

And with budget cuts around every bend, Strong says they've adjusted, and pushed forward.

"We're surprising people on a daily basis by not only continuing to exist, but by thriving."

The campus is gearing up for its official grand opening on Friday, September 6, 2013.

The event is set to kick off at 2 p.m. at its new location, 9500 Industrial Drive in Minden.

The campus Technical Building houses college trade and industrial programs including Automotive/Outdoor Power Equipment, Industrial Instrumentation Technology, Machine Tool Technology, Industrial Maintenance Technology and Welding. The Academic Building houses Health Occupations, Business, Adult and Developmental Education, Admissions/Financial Aid along with administrative offices.
