Children's author headlines Ark. literacy event

Children's author Jack Gantos is expected to take part in the University of Arkansas Literacy Symposium.

Gantos is among three speakers at the event, which starts Friday in the Fayetteville Town Center.

Gantos writes the Rotten Ralph and Joey Pigza series for children and has won numerous awards for his books for children and adults.

Doug Hesse and Carla McClafferty will also take part in the event.

Hesse is an English professor who directs the University of Denver writing program. McClafferty writes nonfiction books and talks about how teachers can use informational texts in the classroom.

The event is sponsored by the curriculum and instruction department in the College of Education and Health Professions.

It runs from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
