Turner Elementary: Makes the Grade

Posted: Updated:

Turner Elementary is one of the largest K-6th grade campuses in Caddo and for the last five year Charles Washington has led the school as principal and up until last year the students at the school were making a passing grade then the state changed what they considered passing.

"The bar raised from 65 to 75 and we were at 74.8," said Washington.

Two tenths of a point , the difference between passing and failing . Washington says the biggest challenge Turner faced was the merging of Hillsdale Elementary school into Turner two years ago. Teacher Sheba Williams says she was not use to bigger class sizes and the size of the school took some getting used to.

"We had figure out a way to put all of our ideas together so that we could be proactive and helpful to the students so they could succeed, " Williams told KTBS Education Reporter Eric James.

Washington says they did pre-assessments on all students to figure out the weaknesses of not only the students from Turner but as well as the students from Hillsdale.

Once everyone was on the same page more time was spent on professional development.

"As teachers we were going workshops, workshops, and more workshops and we pulled together and we helped each other and I really think that was the key, we helped each other," said teacher Nicole Nelson.

Washington says he challenged his teachers to do something different and he is pleased that the school is no longer on the list. The challenge now is to not go back on the list and the pressure is just as heavy.

This year the state of Louisiana reconfigured how they grade schools going from 200 points to a 150 point grading scale. Several factors were also removed from the formula like attendance.

We've been told by many veterans that they receive quality care at the V.A. hospital in Shreveport. But for some getting an appointment to see their caregivers is the challenge. According to our V.A., they do not have a problem getting patients seen quickly - and the numbers they report echo that conclusion. We’ve uncovered concerns, however, over how their numbers look so good - while patients are still waiting to be seen.“Certainly from my viewpoint here, as a veteran, as a physician, the c...

Ever since allegations that veterans died waiting for care came out of phoenix, we've all been asking, why, and how could an organization aimed at helping our servicemen and women foster an atmosphere where this has gone on for so long?
