BTW High School : Makes the Grade

Posted: Updated:

For the last several days we have featured the Caddo Parish Schools that came off of the state's academically unacceptable list.

One of the schools is  Booker T. Washington High School.

The school was facing state take over and once renowned school had lost favor with the community but now faith has been restored.

"A lot of my friends have asked me why I come to this school, considering I went to Shreve Island and Caddo Middle Magnet and they understand," said Senior Kourtlyn Carter.

Carter and fellow classmate D'Wanya Black told Education Reporter Eric James they wanted to be a part of a legacy of change at BTW.

Question ( James ) : What makes BTW special ?

Answer ( Black) : The togetherness of it. Everyone sticks together.

And it would take a lot of togetherness  to pull BTW  out if it's academic downward spiral.  Five years ago fewer than 350 students roamed the halls of the school and in an effort to save the campus it was converted into a 7th -12th grade school and student from J.S. Clark middle school were moved to the high school .

"It's been very helpful. We've been able to see them grow from where they were before. When we were at J. S. Clark we were able to come out of corrective action and now we are here at BTW and we have come out of corrective actions. So they knew our expectations so we didn't have to fight with them," said teacher Sarah Phillips.

In previous interviews  former principal Patrick Greer said he was relying , not only on those  7th and 8th graders from J. S. Clark to help pull test scores up ;but pressure was placed on  every teacher  to find the most innovative techniques to  reach  all students.

"I've always wanted to be part of a staff  who wanted  to make some things happen," said teacher Patrick Dennis.

That's exactly what they have done , consistently upping test scores year after year,  proving to  everyone who said the school was lost  … wrong.

"I was excited.  I was very proud. They can no longer look down on us," said Carter.

Dr. Stacy Russell is the new principal at BTW  and when she met with parents and the alumni association with the school the one thing she talked about was restoring the legacy of the school  and that is part of her mission.
