SPD: Arrest made following shooting that left three teens wounded; more arrests expected

Posted: Updated:

One person is behind bars connected to a shooting that left three teens wounded immediately following a high school football game.

Shreveport Police have Kristopher McClain, 19, with principal to aggravated battery.

The arrest stems from an altercation late Friday evening near the 2300 block of Milam Street, near Booker T. Washington High School.

Authorities say three victims, whose ages range from 15-19 years old, were transported to LSUHSC for treatment of non-life threatening injuries sustained as a result of a shooting.

Upon arrival, authorities learned of an alleged verbal dispute between two groups that erupted into an exchange of gunfire.

It is believed the three victims were injured during the exchange; however the extent of their involvement in the shooting, if any, has not been fully determined.

Police say Desi Hagins, 19, and a 15-year-old juvenile received minor injuries and were later released from the hospital.

KTBS 3 News spoke with Hagins Monday afternoon. He said is doing well and has returned to work. Hagins said he didn't know the shooter and didn't recognize McClain by name.

Markendus Smith, 19, sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and remains hospitalized in good condition.

While some game attendees say the shooter and other in the shooter's group were at the game, SPD says that is not the case.

The department said it's likely the police presence on school grounds prevented the shooter from getting closer to the crowds.

"I think the security measures that are in place have proven historically to be very, very good as far as prevention," Marcus Hines, SPD Public Information Officer, said. "In the event that something does happen, there's a large presence capable of handling the event as it goes forward."

Caddo Parish School currently uses handheld metal detectors and bag searches to maintain security at school football games. Director of Security Roy Murry says the district also hires 12-14 off-duty police officers for each game, in addition to the School Resource Officers already assigned to each school.

Police are currently working to piece together bits of information regarding additional suspects in the shooting and what additional factors led up to the incident.
