Family Sues Caddo Schools Over Alleged Bullying : Warning Signs

Posted: Updated:

The video has now been viewed  nearly 10,000 times on YouTube.  The girls in the video are the sisters of a boy whose parents say tried to kill himself, twice , following several alleged bullying incidents at school.

"Our son was having some major problems with depression, withdrawing, angry, and he was crying a lot," the mother of boy told Education Reporter Eric James.

And those are just some of the warning signs Dr. Katie Garcia says children who are being bullied sometimes express.

"Not eating, not sleeping well but in the same vain you can also see overeating and wanting to sleep a great deal,  " said Garcia.

In the case of the boy in question,  who was 7-year-old at the time, his parents say he gained 45 pounds in the course of a year and that he was allegedly sexually assaulted by the same male student they say was bullying their son.

Question ( James ) : Did you go back to the principal?

Answer ( Mother) :   Yes, we both did. She told us she would take care of it.

The parents say that did not happen and they now blame the principal at the school for the terror they are dealing with, a terror they don't won't other parents to experience.

They have now started a Anti-Bullying Campagin which is part of the reason why the family placed the video on YouTube to raise more awareness.

The Caddo Parish School Board released the following statement:

"This matter is now in litigation.  Because the lawsuit's allegations involve the conduct of two young students, we are unable to provide any additional facts for confidentiality reasons.  The Caddo Parish School Board believes that school officials acted appropriately based on the information that was given to them at the time and CPSB intends to vigorously defend the charges."

Dr. Garcia, who is with the Center for Families, says warning signs of bullying can also be confused with other underlying issues.

She says if parents notice something is different about their child, they should ask questions without being too probing, also they should ask about their friends, and even ask them to play some of the music they may be listening to.

Dr. Garcia says depending on what they say intervention may be necessary.
