Cherokee Park : Makes the Grade

Posted: Updated:

From the outside it looks like any other school but when you walk into Cherokee Park Elementary you quickly realize there is something different about the school. What is it? Well, if you listen closely you will hear music no matter what classroom you step into.

"Music affects different parts of the brain  and it enables the children to hear and think globally.   And at our school we focus on project base learning and part of that is to get children to problem solve and to do that you have to engage the entire brain and the music helps do that,  " said Principal Tyrone Burton who also says the goal of the school is to create a community of lifelong learning, learning that also includes his teachers.

"What we do is we take the best teachers in Caddo and we make them better, " said Burton.

To do that teachers are required to attend a class taught by master teacher Tangela Sylvia.

"It's all hands on deck because  it take a village, so if we go in with that mindset vs. just having the teacher do it all by herself then we are able to support  each other. If a teacher has an issue and needs help figuring out how to teach something better she can come to me and we figure it out together and then we share it with teachers. We sort of beg, borrow and steal ideas and techniques from each other , " said Sylvia.

A method, that's working.  Over the last several year test scores have increased on a consistent basis and Burton says he will continue to do what he has to do to make sure Cherokee park is running on all cylinders.

"I have an internal joy regarding Cherokee Park, I am proud of the teachers and the students here and because of the culture and climate that permeates through the  students and teachers and staff here, a climate that exudes excellence," said Burton.
