Caddo Heights: Makes the Grade

Posted: Updated:

Caddo Heights teacher Amanda Bundrick is often asked why she works at Caddo Heights Elementary School.

"If I didn't work here who would, " she told KTBS Education Reporter Eric James.

"If it weren't for teachers like me committing to schools like this then these student wouldn't stand a chance, " said Bundrick.

And a chance  is what principal Eric Hill says he works to give all  his students.

"Our mission statement is Caddo Heights where the race for excellence has no finish line, " said Hill.

And the race to get off of the state's academically unacceptable list was a full fledge sprint  and the school was constantly losing students along the way.

"Out mobility rate was about 40%  last year.  Our enrollment was constant at about 650 but 800 students came through the door last year,"  Hill explained.

Hill says he and his staff are always looking at the stats of students, analyzing their teaching techniques, and pushing themselves to do more.

"I always question my own teaching skills," said  teacher Tomika Morris.

Skills and techniques that have now pushed the school off the list.

Caddo Heights went onto the list because the state raised the stakes the year before last .

The school missed the mark by about 4 points which left the school on the watch list. The state then changed the standards, going from a 200 point scale to 150 point scale.
