One Class at a Time Winner: Kim Butler

Posted: Updated:

It was at Claiborne Academy in Haynesville, La.,  where we met physical education teacher Kim Butler

We surprised Kim with a check for $1,000 at a pep rally just before the first football game of the year.

Butler told KTBS 3 News that she wrote grant to buy Fitnessgram software to help measure and track student fitness and activity levels.

Butler, who got into athletics because of her own desire to stay fit, says she started to  notice  that many of her students weren't as fit as they should be given their age.

"The kids nowadays aren't getting enough exercise at home or away from school and they are starting to live sedentary lifestyles," said Butler.

The software will allow her to keep track of the fitness level of students, she will also be able to give parents a printout showing the weaknesses of students. Based on student gains made in fitness levels the school could qualify for a national award for having  fit kids.
