Vacant building goes up in flames

Posted: Updated:

Smoke choked a section Youree Drive Saturday afternoon. An abandoned commercial structure caught fire along the busy road, near East Stoner Avenue. Firefighters say it took about 25 minutes to get the fire under control, 17 firefighters fought the blaze. They also kept it from spreading to nearby homes and from further engulfing nearby vegetation. The area's dry conditions make such fire even more dangerous.

"Then we have today where we have a light breeze and the humidity is low. Once we get this dry you have to be very cautious and paying attention to what you are doing. It doesn't take much to get a fire going," SFD Chief Craig Mulford said.

No one was injured in the fire. Officials say the cause is under investigation.
