SHREVEPORT, La. -

After decades of planning and discussion between the state and city, the intersection of Youree Drive and Kings Highway will get a makeover.

City engineers said about 44,500 vehicles pass through that intersection each workday. The plans were approved for the makeover and bidding for the project will start next month.

The city developed the plans but the state Department of Transportation will be in charge of the actual construction. Ron Norwood, Shreveport city engineer says the improvements will come in the form of expansion.

"Right now we have two through lanes north and south," said Norwood. "We're extending that to three. Three lanes north and south which will greatly increase the capacity."

Norwood said the third lane will be added 1,000 feet north and south of the intersection. He also said more cars will be able to turn onto Kings Highway at once with two new dedicated left turn lanes.

A new right turn lane will be added on Youree's northbound lane for drivers turning onto Kings Highway.

"A lot of the reason for the congestion through the intersection is the turning movements," said Norwood. "We are providing for that by increasing the number of turn lanes and also adjusting the traffic signals."

Kings Highway will also get some improvements. The east side of Youree Drive will go to five lanes with a dedicated turn lane all the way to the new intersection with Shreveport-Barksdale Highway.* The turn lane on the west side of Youree Drive will also be extended.

Norwood estimates the project will take at least a year and a half because of the complete reconstruction of most of the intersection.

"We're going to take out the base," Norwood said. "Put in a new base, new pavement. The whole thing."

Norwood said he thought since the bid process will start October 9th, there could be a contract by January or February with actual construction beginning a month or so later. He estimates the project will be completed by middle or end of 2015.

*The intersection of East Kings and Shreveport-Barksdale Highway also gets a facelift. It will go from a type of round-a-bout to a standard T-shape. There will also be two dedicated left turn lanes going from Shreveport-Barksdale to East Kings.
