Caddo Heights residents shaken up after stray bullet strikes young girl

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La. -

Three shootings rocked Shreveport in less than 24 hours, two of those happened just streets apart, and one of them seriously injured a young girl while she slept.

And neighbors in the Caddo Heights area say it's scary, but not surprising.

Belinda and Kevin Cameron live on Corbitt Street, close enough for the couple to have heard the gunshots ring out Monday night.

The Camerons say they were sitting on their porch around midnight, when they heard first one shot, then three more.

They immediately ran for cover, unsure from what direction the shots had been fired.

The couple says that's when police and fire trucks descended on the area.

Belinda Cameron says it wasn't long before they saw a child being loaded into an ambulance.

The 8-year-old been hit by a stray bullet while she was sleeping in a home on nearby Murray Street.

"That could have been my little girl. Even though she's 19, that could have been mine. You know, I wouldn't know what to do if it was mine," Cameron says.

The couple says it was a terrifying sight, but that unfortunately, gunshots are a common occurence in the area.

"It's gone downhill from safety to having to watch your back all the time. You can't walk the streets at night anymore. Used to, I could ride my bike and go anywhere. Now, I just can't. I'm here all the time."

The girl was struck in the legs, but is expected to fully recover.

Just hours before that incident, a man was shot in the face a few blocks away on Doris St. after police say an argument turned violent.

That man - 31-year-old Daranksi Wynder - was last listed in stable condition.

So far, no arrests have been made in either of those shootings.

Anyone with information that could help authorities identify a suspect in either of these cases is asked to call Crimestoppers at (318) 673-7373.

For all the tens of billions of dollars that the nation has spent on screening passengers and their bags, few airports made a comparable investment to secure the airplanes themselves.
The head of Maui's main airport says a 15-year-old stowaway aboard a flight from San Jose had no clue he was in Maui after jumping from a jetliner's wheel well to the tarmac.
