Farmers hurting as drought continues across the Ark-La-Tex

Posted: Updated:

The severe or extreme drought continues across the Ark-La-Tex.

With the lack of rain and hot temperatures local farms are drying up.

The Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry says farmers in Caddo and Desoto Parishes "may" be eligible for federal drought assistance.

Drought is one of the most costly natural disasters affecting the U.S.

Right now, farmers are faced with the reality that the amount of moisture in the soil is not meeting the needs of their crops.

Brandon McCartney, co-owner of McCartney Brothers Farms in Coushatta, says this weekend's promise of rain isn't a huge relief.

McCartney's farm is in Red River Parish, so he's not eligible for aid.

Farmers in eligible areas have eight months to apply for loans to help cover actual losses from drought.
