Learning lessons from Trayvon Martin

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La. -

As a part of the community conversation Thursday night, Brandon Lacy says organizers want to look back at the past five decades of civil rights as well as the recent Trayvon Martin trial.

"We don't want to just meet," Lacy says. "We want to have actual strategies to take back to our community."

Organizers say the best way to do that is together all under one roof and face-to-face.

"The thing is, I'm a bridge builder and I believe we're better together," says Bishop L. Lawrence Brandon. "It's important for us to talk and to have the conversation."

Lacy says we can't change what happened to Martin, but residents can learn from the past and move forward more informed and more united than before.

Lacy says one thing they wanted people to know Thursday night is how to protect themselves and their families. Lacy says the best way to do that is often with knowledge.

"A lot of people didn't even know that Louisiana was a 'Stand Your Ground' state until after the Trayvon Martin trial," Lacy says. "What is the Stand Your Ground law, and how does it affect us here in Shreveport, Louisiana?"

Louisiana passed its Stand Your Ground law in 2006, strengthening the existing Castle Law by adding that there's no obligation to retreat from confrontation.

Thursday's "Lessons Learned from the Trayvon Martin Incident Community Conversation" was hosted by Praise Temple of Shreveport, One Voice Clergy Network, One Voice Political Action Committee, the Northwest Louisiana Community Development Corporation and Code Red.

Guest panelists included State Rep. Barbara Norton (D-Dist. 3) and Caddo Commissioner Jerald Bowman (Dist. 5).
