Fact Check of Viral Video about Healthcare Costs Reveals New Consumer Resource

A viral video about the high costs of Healthcare in the United States is circulating.

Blogger, John Green, produced a video that has surprised and upset many online viewers.  He claims that simplistic explanations of the high cost of healthcare in the U.S., don't stand up to fact checking.  He also counters the idea that socialized medicine would require higher taxation.

While the site, Upworthy.com, that has featured his video claims to fact check all their videos before posting them, KTBS' research team also looked into the issue.  We looked into all the supporting documentation behind his statistics and find that he is accurately portraying the studies he cites.  We've provided links for you to see those reports, here (http://www.commonwealthfund.org/~/media/Files/Publications/Issue%20Brief/2012/May/1595_Squires_explaining_high_hlt_care_spending_intl_brief.pdf

But the most interesting thing we found while digging on this story, is a resource called the Health Care Blue Book.   Much like the Kelly Blue Book for Car Prices, this site gives you some idea of what a procedure, office visit, hospital stay, etc., would cost and can be searched by area code.  https://www.healthcarebluebook.com.   It could come in handy the next time you are faced with (what you feel is) an outrageous medical bill.
