Shreveport Police: Zero Tolerance For Prostitution

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La -

In the early 2000's police officers could go out on a random night and pick up 36 people for prostitution and selling drugs, which police say often to go hand in hand.

Police say street crime is not as bad it used to be, but when it comes to prostitution, police officer Marcus Hines says, Shreveport still has problems.

The Police Department continues to maintain a vice squad that casts a net across the city in various locations.

The internet has opened up new avenues to advertise sex for sale. But though many pimps and prostitutes are now online, police are still catching them.

Officer Hines says prostitution is not a victimless crime because sexually transmitted diseases and HIV threaten both buyer and seller.

And when people get caught, there may not only be a sense of shame but families and careers can be put in jeopardy. Consider the recent Shreveport Fire Department scandal at Station 8 where several fire fighters lost their jobs after being accused of hiring a prostitute to have sex with a disabled man.

There are even diversion programs for those caught trying to buy time with a prostitute. So-called John schools that solicitors of sex can attend rather than do time or pay fines.

Shreveport police have demonstrated that nobody is immune from being prosecuted for this crime.  Early this month one of their own officers was taken into custody by Bossier City Police. He's accused of trying to pick up a prostitute at a Bossier hotel while on duty in his Shreveport squad car. He was turned over to Shreveport police, arrested and booked into Caddo Correctional Center.

According to Louisiana law if you get caught and convicted of picking up a prostitute you are slapped with a $500 fine and could spend up to 6 months in jail.
