Dozens march along Milam Street

Posted: Updated:

The Birmingham, Ala. church bombing 50 years ago inspired marches around the nation, including here in Shreveport. However, protesters were harshly stopped the police chief. Those still with us finished what they started Saturday. They took part in the Memorial Milam Street March Parade. The parade followed a route just over a mile long between Galilee Baptist Church and Booker T. Washington High School.

The march ended with a rally in front of the school where students 50 years ago left to protest along Milam. Saturday's events commemorate the civil rights movement and those that took part in it. It also highlighted the need to keep progress moving.

Of course, we need our community to take responsibility for our actions," Richard Jackson, a parade organizer, said. "That's what we're trying to make sure people know. That's who we are. That's what this community is about. The leaders in the community are just trying to step up and say, just a little bit louder; a whisper in the ear, that it's our community. We can take care of it. We can take care of ourselves."
