Students with Guns : Two Cases in One Week

Posted: Updated:
CADDO PARISH, La. -

Two reports in one week, two different schools,  two different students and  two different districts.

The first was last  Wednesday, a Huntington High 10th grader was arrested for bringing a weapon onto campus.

Shreveport police say  they found an unloaded  40 caliber handgun in the student's waistband.

Then on Friday, a 14 year-old student from Linear, which is run by the Recovery School District of Louisiana,  was arrested after he was caught with an unloaded semi- automatic handgun.

Roy Murry, the director of security for the Caddo Parish School  board says the case last week at Huntington High school is the first incident  this school year  and in most cases it is a situation outside of the walls of the school that prompts students to arm themselves.

"There is not any case that I can remember where a student brought a gun to  for somebody at the school because of a situation that has happened at the school," said Murry.

Murry also told KTBS 3 News that it was after school when another student saw the teen in question with the gun and reported it the next day.  Murry says it is still unclear why the teen had gun and that parents need to be concerned that kids in the neighborhoods are walking around with firearms.

Authorities still aren't sure if Friday was the first time a Linear Leaders hp Academy student took a weapon to school with him.

The semi-automatic handgun was discovered when the boy dropped his back pack on the bus and the unloaded gun feel out. The teen then ran off the bus though the emergency  exit door in the back.  He was later found at home and home is the place where Cpl. Marcus Hines says teens often find these guns.

"It's very important that if you are going to have a gun at home and you have teenagers around or young children that you make sure that gun is out of reach," said Hines.
