Shreveport woman fights back against neighborhood crime

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La. -

Tired of the shots fired, reckless driving and arson attempts, Debbie Catts has taken drastic measures to protect the place she's called home all her life: her house on Shreveport's Huntington Lane.

"I watch the neighborhood constantly," Catts says of her efforts. "I do call the police when there's something that does not seem right."

Catts says she has posted signs in her front yard, her back yard and side door warning intruders of her intent to protect her property by force if necessary.

She says she bought a gun several years ago and learned to use it through Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office training sessions.

Her attempts at neighborhood security are not the only visible from the street.

Neighbors installed security systems and put up surveillance cameras, but they say it's simply not enough.

Now Catts has contacted the Shreveport Police Dept. to set up a neighborhood watch, a tactic seems to be working just one street over.

The cul-de-sac less than two minutes from Catts' front door posts Neighborhood Watch and National Night Out signs.

Residents say their part of the community is quiet, and it might be because of their signs.

"What I like [is] we all get together," says resident Anna Garcia of the neighborhood watch's start. "We eat outside, you know. We know all our neighbors, we knew each other."

SPD recently arrested one juvenile for Catts' son's attack, but the protective mother says she's worried one arrest is not enough to make a change.

"It kind of made me feel better, but I'm a little leery," Catts says. "The detective told me it probably won't be over with one, but I'm prepared."
